Preventive Health and Wellness Services
In order to maintain your cat's optimal health, the Cat Clinic
recommends preventive wellness exams and services for all
life stages. We offer and recommend the following wellness
services:
Comprehensive Physical Examinations- During this visit
our staff will obtain a complete history of your cat's daily
habits and behavior and any changes you may have noticed.
One of our highly qualified veterinarians will thoroughly
examine your cat's eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth, skin, listen
to their heart and lungs, and palpate their abdomen and discuss
any abnormalities with you. Annually we will assess your cat's
need for vaccinations and/or parasite control. Our doctor's
and staff will offer behavior and nutrition counseling, if
necessary. Regular evaluation of you cat's dental health and
the need for routine or curative dental treatments will also
be discussed. After the exam, the doctor will discuss all
abnormalities with you and develop an appropriate health plan
for your cat.
Routine Diagnostic Testing- Advances in veterinary
medicine has allowed us the ability to detect health disorders
earlier than in the past through diagnostic testing. Early
diagnosis helps us to cure or manage illnesses more successfully
than in the past. Thase tests may include:
Diagnostic Blood and Urine Screening- A small
blood and urine sample from your cat can provide us with
a lot of information about your cat's internal health
not detectable by physical exams and clinical signs.
Survey Radiographs- These important pictures allow
the doctor to evaluate your cat's heart and other organs
for abnormal size, and the lungs for evidence of pulmonary
disease and cancer. We can also evaluate bones and joints
for for painful arthritis. Many internal disorders are
present without symptoms and early detection is the key
for successful treatment before they become painful and
create discomfort for your cat.
Blood Pressure Monitoring- Hypertension can be
found in older cats and early detection can help prevent
serious and sometimes irreversible blindness and/or organ
damage.
Dental Care- Dental disease is one of the most common
diseases found in pets. The bacteria that causes dental disease
can be a source of chronic infection and discomfort in your
cat and has been known to cause serious organ infections.
The Cat Clinic of Orange County offers complete dental services
to maintain your cat's dental health. Our services include:
Complete Dental Cleaning and Treatment- This includes
ultrasonic scaling of plaque and tarter, high speed polishing,
flouride treatment, and plaque prevention gel application.
Dental Radiographs- These pictures of your cat's
mouth help us to detect disease below the gumline and
sometimes help avoid the need for tooth extraction.
Dental Extractions and Fillings- These procedures
may be necessary if there are decayed or damaged teeth.
Home Care Products- Home dental care is the key
to preventing tooth decay. We offer a complete line of
dental products including feline toothbrushes, toothpaste,
plaque prevention gel, oral rinses, and even tarter control
treats and diets to help maintain your cat's oral health.
Parasite Control- Parasites are a common cause of disease
in cats and many can cause serious disease in people. Luckily,
these parasites are easily treated or prevented with regular
parasite control.
Flea Preventives- Fleas live year round
in Southern California, therefore we recommend using monthly
flea control products all year. Be careful using "over
the counter" flea products on cats, since some can be
dangerous. If you have dogs, we recommend not using products
containing permethrin. This chemical, even when applied to
dogs can cause toxic effects in cats if they maintain close
contact. We carry and recommend the following products:
Frontline Plus for Cats, Advantage for Cats, and
Revolution for Cats
Fecal Testing- This microscopic evaluation of
your cat's stool can detect the presence of internal parasites
that can cause illness in cats and people. There are many
types of parasites that are not killed by regular deworming
products. These parasites can be detected by fecal examination.
Our fecal exams include a microscopic examination of a
small amount of stool directly applied to a slide with
a special stain, and a fecal "flotation" where
parasite eggs are "floated" in a special solution
and examined under the microscope.
Broad Spectrum Deworming- The product we use for
routine dewormings is effective against Tapeworms, Roundworms
and Hookworms. This is most important for kittens and
cats that go outside.
Life Stage Recommendations
The above exams and services are recommended at regular intervals
according to your cat's life stage. The recommended schedule is
for healthy cats. Our recommendations may change according to
your cats health condition:
Healthy Kittens (<1 year of age)-
Initial Comprehensive Physical Examination (additional
exams prior to each vaccine administration).
Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS Viral Testing- Recommended
for all new cats and very important before introductions to
other cats.
Microscopic Fecal Examination- Very important when
acquiring new kittens. This important test can detect internal
parasites that can be contagious to other cats as well as
to children.
Broad Spectrum Deworming Series
FVRCP Vaccine Series (8, 12, and 16 weeks of age)
Other Vaccinations as needed after assessment by the veterinarian
Microchip Implantation- This identification chip can
help to bring your pet home if it becomes lost or injured.
Comprehensive Blood Screening and Survey Radiographs
(Prior to Spay/Neuter Surgery). These tests help to identify
conditions that may interfere with anesthesia and provide
great baseline levels for future reference as your cat gets
older.
Healthy Adult Cats (1-8 years of age)-
Comprehensive Physical Examinations and Vaccine Assessment
(Annually)
Dental Treatments (as needed, every 1-3 years)
Flea Control (monthly for outdoor cats, as needed
for indoor cats)
Diagnostic Testing (every 2-3 years and when signs
of illness)
Healthy Senior Cats (>8 years of age)-
Comprehensive Physical Examinations and Vaccine Assessment
(every 6 months)
Diagnostic Blood and Urine Screening (Annually)
Survey Radiographs (every 2-3 years and when signs
of illness)
Blood Pressure Monitoring (Annually)
Dental Treatments (as needed, every 2-3 years)
Flea Control (monthly for outdoor cats, as needed
for indoor cats)
